Thanks to all who attended the Bruce Beauchamp Annual Dinner on April 21, 2012 at the Canadiana restaurant. We were honoured with the presence of many special guests and attendees. At the end of the evening a cheque for $480 was presented to the Bruce Beauchamp Memorial Fund. An enjoyable evening was had by all.

April 19-21 also saw members of the IFBA converge upon the Toronto Sheraton Hotel for the annual Spring Board Meeting. Thank you to the Regional VPs and other guests for making the trip to our fair city. We look forward to hosting the convention in August and hope to see you all there!

Submissions for Photo & Fire Buff of the Year

The club is once again accepting submissions for Fire Buff of the Year and for GTMAA Photographer of the Year.

Written nominations for Fire Buff of the Year can be submitted to any Past President. Submissions must be accompanied with justification as to why the member is deserving of the award.

Photographer of the Year submissions must be sent to Cedric Beasley. Each member may submit up 5 photos taken in 2011. Entries will be accepted no later than the March 20, 2012 meeting.

Multiple alarm at 97 Pelham Ave

Support 7 attended a major 5th alarm fire at 97 Pelham Avenue in Toronto Fire West Command. The structure involved is a 4 storey self-storage facility with fire conditions throughout. Several towers and an aerial are being utilized for the defensive attack with many handlines and monitors in use. Rehab efforts were provided collaboratively between Box 12 and Support 7, with Support 7 on scene from 1600-2359 on January 9th and from 0930-1300 on January 10th. TFS crews remained on scene throughout the week dousing hotspots and assisting with the OFM investigation. This was our first canteen run of 2012. These are the full and final details.

Firefighters battle a commercial fire at Galena-Signal Oil Co. of Canada Ltd, circa 1926.

Galena-Signal Oil specialized in lubricants for the railroad industry and was a subsidiary of the American petroleum conglomerate Standard Oil. The company was eventually purchased by Valvoline in 1931. This particular facility was located alongside the CN rail corridor at 134 Royce Ave (now Dupont St) near the northeast corner of Dupont and Campbell Ave. Photo courtesy City of Toronto Archives.
