The Toronto Fire Services Communications Division is staffed each tour with 11 personnel: 1 District Chief; 2 Captains; and 8 call takers/dispatchers.
Talkgroups are currently allocated on a digital APCO Project 25 Phase II 700 MHz trunked communications system. The system is split into four zones for each command. Station alerting is performed via automated voice dispatch, which is simulcast on the Dispatch 1 channel.
Operationally, Tac 1 is used for single apparatus calls such as EMS incidents. Tac 2 to Tac 4 are the primary tactical channels. The Ops channel is used for routine, non-emergency traffic and on-air dispatch.
District Chief vans are equipped with Motorola DVRS (Digital Vehicular Repeater System) mobile repeaters, which can be activated in areas of poor reception such as the PATH system, subway platforms, or underground parking garages. The repeaters are then patched with the assigned tac channel.
